On the surface, the two most recent movies I’ve seen couldn’t have less in common. My Week With Marilyn showcases Hollywood’s golden age with the most iconic celebrity of the time. Raw, gritty, and dark best describe The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Punk is 180 degrees from glam, right?
Yet both movies center around women desperate for control. Marilyn’s insecurity is well documented through her use of pills and numerous affairs. She sought approval in the only way she knew how. But how much of that was naive innocence and how much was contrived? Was she a victim or a shrewd manipulator? Those are the questions I came away with.
Lisbeth Salander, on the other hand, is independent to a fault. She goes to great lengths to keep everyone at arm’s length. Despite her antisocial demeanor and behaviors we are able to glimpse her vulnerability as she slowly opens a door and begins to trust her boss/mentor Mikael Blomkvist. I’m very much looking forward to following Lisbeth’s development in the next installment.
